Ouran High School Host Club is a manga written by Bisco Hattori. The series has been adapted to 26 anime episodes. This review is based on the anime because I haven’t read the manga. Ouran Host Club follows the life of Fujioka Haruhi in prestigious Ouran High School, a school for rich people. Haruhi, a commoner entered the school under special scholarship program. When she is looking for a quite place to study, she stumbles upon the third music room, a place where the school’s host club gathers, the club consists of six handsome male students. During their first meeting Haruhi accidentally knocks over and breaks a vase valued at eight millions yen. To pay the vase, Haruhi is told to join the club and dresses as a boy in order to pay off her debt.
I love Ouran Host Club, it remains as one of my favorite anime all time besides Honey & Clover
. This anime is super hilarious and not your typical shoujo series. Ouran is like a parody for all stereotypes and cliches that you most likely find in shoujo series, e.g: the over the top male lead, the cool Megane character, super kawaii childish character, etc. However, for me the main appeal of this series is the exceptional heroine, Fujioka Haruhi. Haruhi is not your typical sugary cute, dumb, and helpless shoujo heroine. She is smart, down to earth, and witty. She is someone that you can relate with in real life. In contrary, the six hosts’ personalities is beyond bizarre, their wacky personality and behavior is the source of all the hilariousness in this series.
If you are expecting a great love story, you will be disappointed, because this anime emphasizes more in the relationships between characters; the friendship between the complete-opposite Tamaki and Kyoya, the peculiar strong bond between the twins, the faithful friendship between Mori and Honey, and the relationship between Haruhi and the host club as whole. Gradually, Haruhi begins to like everyone in the club and the club itself despite her initial dislikes. She realizes that the club is not merely a host club, with Tamaki as the glue of the club, each members feels the invisible bond between them. The friendship among the members is the highlight of this series and it is worth to watch for.
Since this anime is based on Shoujo manga, of course there will be a love story between characters, even though it’s not prominent. Haruhi has many admirers but she is very oblivious towards any kind of romantic feelings, which creates many hilarious situation (Bossanova!). Tamaki and the twins are one of her biggest admirers and victims of her obliviousness. Tamaki obviously like Haruhi, but he is too naive to recognize his feeling, so he considers his feeling to Haruhi as a feeling between father and daughter (really stupid I know, but it’s hilarious!). The twins like Haruhi too, especially Hikaru, they both were impressed with her ability to tell them apart straight away, the first person who is able to do so.
Personally, I don’t really care about the love story. but judging by how the story flows and the ending, the main couple will be Haruhi and Tamaki. There is a tiny bit evidence that Haruhi likes Tamaki, but she basically cares about everyone, so you never know. And the ending of this anime is excellent, the climax is very well build until the end. Although it’s an open-ending, it’s the strongest ending that I ever seen.
Anime Scores: 5 out of 5
Recommended: This is a-must-watch anime, very hilarious, I re-watched it so many times and still laughed like crazy!
