Shim Eun Kyung and Joo Won in Tomorrow’s Cantabile

As a big fan of Japanese Drama’s Nodame Cantabile, I was skeptical when I read about the Korean remake. Nodame Cantabile is one of the best Japanese dramas that I ever watched. Ueno Juri was brilliant as the quirky Nodame and I don’t think anyone can match her performance. Moreover judging by the failure of many Korean remakes for Japanese dramas (Boys Over Flowers, To The Beautiful You, Playful Kiss), I think they should stop remaking Japanese dramas (especially the one based on manga).

There are fundamental differences between Japanese and Korean drama. Japanese dramas are more straight-forward with down to earth theme, romantic scenes are very rare. While Korean Dramas are more long-winded with dramatic and cliche theme, romantic scenes are many between OTP. None is better than another of course, since it all depends on your taste. However, these fundamental differences are very glaring when you compare both original and remake version. And really when you remake something, you can’t stop people from comparing it right? Especially if it’s high profile drama like Hana Yori Dango, Hana Kimi or Nodame Cantabile.

When I first read that Yoona SNSD was confirmed to play Nodame, I was so worried and anxious. Yoona is very pretty but she is not suitable to play Nodame, not to mention her so-so acting skill. This casting is a recipe for disaster and fortunately many people think the same way. Finally, Yoona backed out, I think she realized the backlash. Later on, the first candidate Shim Eun Kyung decided to accept the offer to play Nodame. Shim Eun Kyung is hailed as one of the best actors of her generation, she is talented, charming and quirky. Just what I imagine Nodame to be like.

With the casting of Shim Eun Kyung and Joo Won (I heard he is pretty talented too, never watched his drama though), I think this remake will not be that bad and pretty much watchable. The drama and character posters are very glossy and shoujo-ish, Joo Won looks charismatic and handsome as Chiaki while Shim Eun Kyung looks very cute and charming, pretty much what I expect from her. Judging by the posters and teasers, I think this drama will be more focused on the romance. Which is not a bad thing since the lovey-dovey scenes are very rare in the Japanese one. The title changed to Tomorrow’s Cantabile as Nodame’s name changed to Nae Il (means tomorrow).

Joo Won nodame

The first trailer took place in Vienna, Austria where the two main characters meet for the first time (?) There is still no interaction between them so I can’t judge much. The show will be aired on October 13th in KBS, let’s wait and see how good (or bad) the remake will be. For now I will remain optimistic for Tomorrow’s Cantabile. Check out the trailer below:
