You Who Came From The Stars

Valentine’s day is coming very soon and I bet you need a dose of good love story to warm your heart. Therefore let me introduce you to my new favorite Korean Drama, You Who Came From The Stars starring Kim Soo Hyun and Jun Ji Hyun. The handsome and cute Kim Soo Hyun is playing Do Min Joon; an alien who lands on Earth in the year 1609 during the Joseon Dynasty, then stays on the planet for the next four centuries, as his spaceship suffers an accident and he cannot leave. He possesses a perfect appearance, enhanced physical abilities including his vision, hearing and speed.

In the present Do Min Joon works as a college professor and finds out that due to a comet coming in three months, he will be able to return to his home planet. Later on he accidentally meets famous actress Cheon Song Yi when she moves in next door to his luxurious apartment and also turns out to be attending his classes at college. Min Joon finds out that young Song Yi looks like the young girl he fell in love with in the Joseon era. He tries to keep himself away from her but he just can’t stay away from her and he gradually falls in love with her.

This drama is well written with good mix of romance, comedy and melodrama. Not to mention the great chemistry between Kim Soo Hyun and Jun Ji Hyun (at first I was skeptical about their age gap but their chemistry is so good!) I will not give full review for this drama since it hasn’t ended yet, but I will give my 5 reasons why you must watch this great drama, check it out below:

1. Jun Ji Hyun’s performance as Top Halyu Star; Cheon Song Yi

You Who Came From The Stars

Jun Ji Hyun reached the ultimate stardom with her role in My Sassy Girl, she’s one of the Top Hallyu stars, so basically she’s playing herself in this drama. Cheon Song Yi is a gorgeous superstar in Korea, she is obnoxious, attention-seeker and does whatever she wants. She has been working as an actress since her teens, hence she has little knowledge of normal life which lead to some of the funniest moment in the drama. Basically she is very bad in domestic chores.

Cheon Song Yi is a character that you can’t hate because she is so funny and over the top (a bit crazy too LOL) but at the same time she is very vulnerable and lonely. Yes she can be very obnoxious and selfish but you know she is not a bad person. And even though she appears to be an airhead, she is actually can be pretty sharp at some situations. I always love her confidence and pride, it’s hilarious to see how she throws away all her pride when she starts to fall in love with the 400-years-old alien man.

2. Kim Soo Hyun’s performance as Doo Min Joon

You Who Came From The Stars

On the hand of incapable actor, Do Min Joon can be just a one dimensional character because most of the time he appears to be stoic, cold and cynical. Fortunately, Kim Soo Hyun is a capable actor who can show wide range of emotions with subtle expression and gesture despite the stoic nature of his character. And he is really great with crying scene too, just look at that photo, you can feel the deep sadness and regret within him.

Do Min Joon knows he need to stay away from Cheon Song Yi (since he will return to his planet soon) but he just can’t stop himself, he wants to protect Cheon Song Yi and it’s not because she resembles the girl from his past anymore. Right now he truly loves her and he is willing to put everything at risk for her.

3. Chemistry and relationship between the lead stars

Do Min Joon and Cheon Song Yi have the perfect chemistry despite their obvious age gap (Technically, he is much older than she is in the drama but in real life Jun Ji Hyun is 7 years older than Kim Soo Hyun). They are the complete opposite of each other, Do Min Joon is very logical and cold whereas Cheon Song Yi is emotional and over-the-top. Kinda like ice and fire. Fate is the theme of their relationship, Do Min Joon lost the young girl he loves 400 years ago, it traumatized him real bad but he found love once again with the other version of her; the older and much hotter Cheon Song Yi.

I love their funny interaction, Cheon Song Yi always bring trouble to Do Min Joon and initially he was very irritated but gradually he just can’t help himself to protect and save Song Yi whenever she is in trouble. Well, he always save her since 400 years ago anyway, obviously he is here on earth for that sole mission. It’s hilarious how he used to mock human for their feelings and jealousy while he, himself is obviously guilty for all of that. Both are also hilariously insane when they are jealous or being rejected, no wonder they are perfect match for each other.

4. Well written plot and conflict

You Who Came From The Stars

I must admit that this drama is very well written because I rarely got bored and enjoy every scenes of it. The element fantasy is used in the right portion, although it can be too much in some episodes but it’s forgivable since it’s entertaining enough. Somehow I got a feeling that the writer wants to portray Do Min Joon as a Superman (he is from other planet too right?) and Cheon Song Yi as Lois Lane.

Actually there is really no new element in this drama, some cliche plots from other Korean Dramas are being reused however the writing is very good along with the great performances from the lead and supporting actors. My only complaint is Lee Jae Kyung; the unnecessary ruthless character, he can be too scary sometimes and I seriously need a background story of him, no one can be that bad without a reason.

5. The OST

The soundtrack of this drama is awesome and really suitable to enhance the over-all feeling of the scenes. My favorite is Goodbye by Hyorin, they used this song quite often for the sweet moments between our leading characters. Check out the official MV below for the song (it’s very sweet and touching!)

Okay that’s all for my five reasons. If you haven’t watched it, go watch it today on this link: http://www.dramago.com/korean-drama/my-love-from-another-star
